The Sensory Garden, a new chapter in Girton College gardening

The idea of a sensory garden at Girton College came about during the pandemic, when former Mistress, Susan J. Smith felt inspired by the sensory garden down in the Girton village. A garden design competition was launched and several of these entries were combined to create a final design. Upon her arrival, Girton’s new (and first female!) head gardener, Dr Julia Andersson, was presented with this design which was used to create the final garden. During her talk Julia looked at the development of the sensory garden from start to finish, its importance as well as at its future. We concluded the event with a walk around the sensory garden stimulating our senses!

Julia Andersson

Julia started her horticultural training at Naturbruksgymnasiet Uddetorp in Sweden, followed by training at Pershore College, Cambridge University Botanic Garden and Chelsea Physic Garden. She completed her Kew Diploma in botanical horticulture at The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in 2018 and has since worked in the gardens departments at King’s College and Christ’s College.
