Purcell: Sacred Theatre

CMP St Johns Passion
  • NICK MULROY Director
  • MAGGIE FAULTLESS Director
  • Cambridge University CHAMBER CHOIR
  • Cambridge University COLLEGIUM MUSICUM

The Centre for Music Performance are bringing another immersive performance to Girton College with Purcell: Sacred Theatre. This builds on the acclaimed performance of JS Bach’s St John Passion by the same forces at Girton in 2024.

A carefully crafted programme that will bring together Purcell’s music for the church and the theatre, including excerpts from The Fairy Queen. It showcases the composer’s matchless imagination and inspiring insight in pieces dealing with the eternal themes of joy, loss, betrayal, and love, capturing the flavour of late 17th century England when music flourished after the Restoration – but with a French taste.

Featuring some of the University’s finest instrumentalists and singers and co-directed by Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment leader and Girton Bye-Fellow, Margaret Faultless and distinguished tenor and Girton's Musician-in-Residence, Nicholas Mulroy. The concert will be performed immersively, with audience members seated in the round and performers moving freely among them.

Programme to include:

  • Excerpts from Purcell The Fairy Queen
  • Purcell Evening Hymn
  • Purcell Fantasia on One Note
  • Purcell Saul and the Witch of Endor

Tickets:

£18 | Concessions: £14.50 | Students and Under 18s: £5; unreserved seating, in the round.
