On 25 January 2024, marking the 8-year anniversary of the death of Giulio Regeni, Girton College unveiled a plaque in memory of the former student at the College in a private event closed to the public.

The College and University continue to stand in support of Giulio’s family and friends, and with Amnesty International, in their tireless efforts to uncover the truth of what happened to Giulio 8 years ago. We welcome the news that court officials in Rome have set a trial date of 20 February 2024 for the four Egyptian security officials charged with Giulio’s abduction, torture and murder.

Giulio’s case remains unresolved, and through the unveiling of the plaque we wish to honour his memory and to underline our hope of seeing justice for Giulio. The plaque offers a space in Girton College in which colleagues and friends of Giulio may pay their respects and remember Giulio.

The Mistress said,

The loss of Giulio continues to cast a dark shadow over all those who knew him. Giulio was a passionate researcher with a deep sense of justice who had his whole life ahead of him before it was cruelly ended in Cairo. Justice has yet to be done. We will never stop remembering Giulio.

Giulio Regeni was a PhD student conducting field work in Cairo for his research at the time of his death. Giulio was an experienced researcher, who had previously undertaken field work in Egypt for his work on legal independent trade unions.

On 25 January 2016, he was abducted from the streets of Cairo, his body was found a week later on 3 February 2016. Every year the College marks his anniversary by flying the College flag to half-mast in memory on 25 January and then on 3 February. The Chapel is always open during the anniversary period so the community can light a candle for Giulio and reflect on the life of the fine scholar, great friend, and passionate advocate for human rights.
