Roll of Alumni Dinner and Weekend

We look forward to welcoming over 250 Girtonians and their guests to the Roll of Alumni Weekend and Dinner on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September. We especially look forward to welcoming back the matriculation years of 1965, 1975, and 1985 for their reunions. 

Please find below a reminder of the arrangements and programme for the weekend.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions. A member of the Development Office will be available at the Reception Desk at all times if you need anything throughout the weekend.

We look forward to welcoming you back to College!

For those who have reserved a room in College, your room will be available from 2pm (unless advised otherwise) with check in at the Porters’ Lodge. Breakfast will be served between 8am and 10am on Saturday and Sunday.

Guests who are staying in College are welcome to use the swimming pool during their stay, lone swimming is not permitted. The swimming pool will be open on Sunday from 7am to 10pm, please collect a key from the Porters’ Lodge.  Please note swimming lessons may be taking place on Sunday morning.

We appreciate that guests may want to change before dinner. The pool changing area is available for guests to change into their evening attire. If you require the changing areas, please speak to the Porters' Lodge and they will open the area for you.

There is plenty of parking available at the College; please use the Mare’s Run car park off Girton Road. Please note there is no longer parking in Cloister Court.

Accessible parking is available in Ash Court (through the barrier near Mare’s Run Car Park) car park and opposite Old Kitchens entrance. Please let us know if you require accessible parking.

Please note that photographs may be taken during this event and may be used in publicity material for Girton College, if you have any concerns regarding this, please get in touch with the alumni team.

There is a designated smoking and vaping area next to the maintenance building. Please do not smoke elsewhere on the College grounds.

The Reception Room next to the Porters' Lodge can be used to store coats and luggage. Please note that items are left at your own risk.

Connect to the UniOfCam-Guest free Wi-Fi by using your preferred platform or register by email. Alternatively, a Wi-Fi password can be collected from the Porters’ Lodge. Due to the historic nature of the buildings, the Wi-Fi reception differs from place to place

Saturday 27 September

The Reception Desk will be open for the collection of name badges, programmes, and reunion booklets from 10.30-19.00. This will be in the Reception Room.

Free Tea and Coffee will be available outside the Old Hall from 10.30-17.00.

The Library will be open from 12.00-18.00

The Bar (both upstairs and downstairs) will be open from 18.00-midnight.

The People's Portraits Exhibition is open for the duration of the weekend.

Self-guided tour booklets of the College buildings and gardens are available to collect from the reception desk. 

Breakfast will be served in the Cafeteria and Hall from 8am-10am for those staying in College

Stanley Library

This year's speaker will be Dr Stephanie J. Lahey. Dr Lahey was the Oschinsky Fellow at Girton College in 2023–24 and is currently the Mark Andrews Postdoctoral Fellow in Book Science at the University of Toronto’s Old Books New Science Lab. Her research interests include Book History, Book Science, and Manuscript Studies.

Lunch will be available to purchase in the cafeteria in the Dining Hall. We accept card payments only. 

Old Hall

This talk will focus on how archaeologists analyse human remains to learn about the lifeways of past people. What stories do our bones hold? What are the sensitive issues around handling the dead for scientific analyses and museum display? Osteoarchaeologist and curator, Dr Trish Biers will lead you through some of the ways in which scholars and practitioners work with the dead and share case studies from the field.

The Lawrence Room, which houses Hermione Grammatike, Girton's resident mummy, will be open from 15.00-16.00.

Chapel

Join Cavendish Arts Science Fellow Akeelah Bertram as she shares her latest research from her fellowship. This experience will share her concepts and work in progress on ‘Sacred Architecture’ the exploration of how emotional and spiritual resonance shape space, through an immersive soundscape. This evolving research thinks about new possibilities for human-technology collaboration that embodies ancient sensing wisdom while building bridges to contemporary innovation. 

The session will be 40 minutes.

Fellows' Drawing Room

This year’s reception will mark the donation to the exhibition of two new portraits of Eniola Sokalu by Mark Roscoe RP. 

The speaker* will be Daniel Hausherr, Senior Storyteller at the National Portrait Gallery. During his talk, Portraiture: Inside the Heart and Mind, he will tell the story of one artwork in the national collection. The talk aims to illustrate the importance of portraiture to our history and what it tells us about our relationships to each other.

This year we will also celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the People's Portraits Collection.

Chapel

Old Hall

Girton alumna and distinguished flautist Ileana Ruhemann (Music, 1979) will perform alongside Dr Martin Ennis, Fellow and Director of College Music at Girton, in this year’s concert.

Their programme will include Francis Poulenc’s Flute Sonata, as well as works by Fauré, Debussy, and Bach.

There will be a retiring collection; donations can be accepted by cash or card.

Pre-dinner drinks will be available for all attending the Roll of Alumni Dinner.

If the weather is good, the drinks reception will be held in Emily Davies Court and on the terrace in Cloister Court.

Drinks will be held in the Stanley Library (alumnae that matriculated in 1950s and 1960s, alongside guests of the College), Old Hall (alumnae and alumni from 1970s), and the Fellows' Drawing Rooms (alumni from the 1980s onwards). 

 

Dining Hall

A traditional formal dinner in Hall, with reunion tables for those who matriculated in 1965, 1975, and 1985. The dress code is black tie, with academic gowns not worn.

We are compiling Reunion Booklets for each reunion year group (1965, 1975, and 1985) that are filled with biographies from you and your contemporaries. Thank you so much to everyone that has responded to our call for biographies so far! Details can be submitted through this form, including photographs, or by responding to this email. We would prefer to receive biographies by Wednesday 24 September. If you have any queries about the booklet, please do contact us.

Sunday 28 September

The Reception Desk will be open from 10.00-11.00 for the collection of programmes and name badges, and any queries you may have.

Join Girton Fellow Dr Arik Kershenbaum for an engaging talk on the rich biodiversity of the College grounds and their important role as a sanctuary for wildlife within the city of Cambridge.

Dr Kershenbaum is a zoologist whose research focuses on animal communication and the evolution of language. He also supervises undergraduate students in Mathematical Biology and Animal Biology at Girton College, University of Cambridge. His recent publications are Why Animals Talk (2024) and The Zoologist's Guide to the Galaxy. What Animals on Earth Reveal About Aliens - And Ourselves (2020).

Self-guided garden tour booklets will be available after the event and throughout the weekend, inviting you to explore the grounds and discover their hidden ecological treasures at your own pace.
