Research themes

I started my academic career in the history and philosophy of science and technology but somehow found myself working in, and then leading business schools, researching in the sociology of management and business ethics. I still do occasional work on the problems of business ethics (there is a depressingly endless supply of such problems), but most of my research over the last ten years has been on the social history of morals. My last book was on the history of the mid-Victorian women’s movement, and I currently working on a wider study of moral attitudes in the same period.

Responsibilities

Being retired I am free of formal responsibilities (except committees!), but always happy to engage with anyone studying in cognate areas.

Other

I joined Girton as a Professorial Fellow when I came back to Cambridge in 1990 to set up the MBA course and what is now the Cambridge Judge Business School, and though my career has taken me elsewhere since, I have always remained a Girton fellow.
