Girton is delighted to announce that Professor Toni Williams, Director of Division of Law, Society and Social Justice and a member of the Executive Team at the University of Kent, will join the College as Senior Tutor from 1 October 2022, succeeding Dr Sandra Fulton

Professor Williams has a distinguished interdisciplinary research and teaching career based in Law Schools in the UK and internationally, including visiting positions at the University of Wisconsin Law School, the University of Toronto Law School, City University of Hong Kong and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Professor Williams joins the College at a time of change, as we restructure the academic operation and roll out a new and ambitious strategic plan with inclusive excellence at its core.

The Mistress, Professor Susan J. Smith, said:

“Professor Williams’ leadership skills, commitment to outreach, and success in bridging the awarding gap, will be invaluable as Girton looks to the future. She combines a clear understanding of the challenges around student mental health, welfare and wellbeing, with a leaning to excellence, and an interest in all that a residential higher education can offer by way of enrichment and opportunity.”

Professor Toni Williams said:

“I am excited to join an institution that was founded for inclusion, and is steeped in qualities – friendliness, collegiality, and respect for differences in background, identities, strengths, weaknesses and personalities – that are important to me”

The Mistress-elect Dr Elisabeth Kendall noted:

“ ‘Pioneering, progressive, fearless’: Girton College and Professor Williams have these themes, and more, in common. I look forward enormously to working with our new Senior Tutor as the next chapter of an inspiring story unfolds.”
